      Create the hike

On Activities tap New activity and pick Hike. Set the title, depart and return times, the start point (search for it so the weather and sunset are accurate) and the section.

    2. 2

      Build the route card

Open the Route tab and add a leg for each stretch between recognisable points. Give each leg a place name and grid reference, distance in km, ascent in metres, a bearing and a terrain note. Leave the time blank and it is estimated with Naismith's rule — 5 km/h plus a minute per 10 m of climb — or type your own. Totals and an estimated finish time show at the bottom.

    3. 3

      Note your escape routes

Each leg has an escape route field. Fill it in so anyone on the day knows the bail-out option if the weather or the group turns.

    4. 4

      Set terrain and conditions

On the Overview tab, pick the terrain grade, check the sunset time and set an 'off the hill by' time. Add wind direction, force, gusts and visibility on the morning so the record matches what you actually walked in.

    5. 5

      Check the kit

A new hike starts with a default group and personal kit list on the Plan tab. Tick items off, edit them or add your own — it is a starting point, not a fixed list.

    6. 6

      Roster and ratio

Add scouts and scouters on the Roster tab. Hikes warn below 1 scouter per 6 youth, and you can tick each scouter's Mountain Skills 1 and 2, Mountain Leader, First Aid and Navigation columns so the qualified cover is visible at a glance.
